The history of Casa Santini begins in the 1960s, when, in the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, boats brought food, mail and a few tourists. Over the years, this beautiful classic building, located in the Porto-Vecchio bay, was designed to welcome travellers from Corsica and elsewhere…
In the Santini family, it is not by chance that one is a hotelier and restaurateur. It all started with Florinde Santini, grandmother of Jean-Marc, the current owner of the Hotel Goéland. In 1922, Florinde Santini opened the first restaurant in Porto-Vecchio. “Le Café de la Poste”, then located in the upper town, has been delighting Porto-Vecchio with its traditional and family cuisine for over 40 years !
Nicolas, a resistance fighter
Nicolas Santini participated in the liberation of Corsica and then France with the famous 2nd DB. He was a strong personality, forged by the Resistance. On his return he decides to build a family house.
A titanic task
With tourism in Corsica still little developed, Nicolas Santini, a visionary, begins work. He wants to build this house, with a few rooms, which without knowing it, will be the ancestor of the guesthouse. The Goéland’s adventure begins.
With no-one taking his adventure seriously, in a most improbable location , he digs the foundations with his hands in a 30m x 15m rock. The main structure of the building is erected in 1962…
Destroyed by a tornado
In December of the same year, a tornado strickes Porto-Vecchio, destroying the building and years of work. Nicolas, does not intend to be thwarted by this ironic twist of fate and resumes the construction.
At the opening, Le Goéland has 5 rooms and a small snack bar offering breakfasts. The extension work continues until 1968 reaching 22 rooms over 900 m2.
From father to son
Jean-Marc, Nicolas’s son, is trained in tourism at the Geneva Hotel School. Improving his knowledge by managing prestigious establishments throughout the world, he takes over from his father in 1995.
Facing the sea
The hotel’s modernization work continues, and the garden is planted with endemic species. A small private beach is created. The compromise is ideal: come to Le Goéland by boat and anchor in its private port.
Every winter, between 2005 and 2011, Casa Santini is renovated and extended to create a coherent entity.
The hotel is finished
Casa Santini is in its final form. The main building offers three floors and 34 rooms over a total area of 2900 m2 as you see it today.
The Goéland’s restaurant
Japanese chief Satoshi Kubota joins the Goéland’s team for a new culinary experience in Porto-Vecchio. This winter 2018, the restaurant is being renovated, to be discovered during your visit in 2019….
